This view of the Great East River Suspension Bridge shows the structure from a high vantage point, with its towers and cables stretching across the water between Manhattan and Brooklyn. The bridge, later known as the Brooklyn Bridge, opened in 1883 after more than a decade of construction. Its design came from John A. Roebling, who died before work began, and it was finished under his son Washington Roebling and daughter-in-law Emily Warren Roebling. When it opened, its main span was the longest of any suspension bridge in the world, and the print captures the excitement of a city showing off a major engineering feat.
