Seen from a high vantage point, the city stretches out in a wide sweep with Central Park laid across its middle like a dark green rectangle. Bird's-eye panoramas like this became popular in the late 1800s and early 1900s, when lithographers and photographers worked to capture the rapid growth of Manhattan's grid of streets and towers. Central Park, finished in the 1870s after decades of planning by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux, gave the city a large designed landscape amid the dense blocks. Views like this one help show how the park stood out as an open space in a city that was otherwise packed tight.
