From a bird's-eye height above lower Manhattan, this poster looks out across the upper bay, where the harbor opens toward the Narrows and the Atlantic. Issued under the New York Central System name, it was a promotional piece meant to draw travelers to the city by rail, and its credited artist, Leslie Ragan, worked on the railroad's advertising in the 1920s. The high angle packs the towers of lower Manhattan into view, a visual shorthand for the modern metropolis that railroad advertisers hoped passengers would see at the end of their trip.
