Castle Garden, at the southern tip of Manhattan, was the main immigrant landing station in New York from 1855 until 1890, and this wood engraving shows arrivals coming ashore there in 1880. A.B. Shults drew the scene for Harper's Weekly, where it ran in the May 29, 1880 issue, and the engraving reflects the steady flow of newcomers that the magazine often covered in its period. Castle Garden had originally been a fort and later a concert hall before the federal government took it over for processing, and it preceded the opening of Ellis Island in 1892.
