Inside a Ford Motor Company plant in Detroit, immigrant workers sit in an English class run by the Department of Labor's training service. Dated between 1909 and 1932, the photograph captures a period when many newcomers from Europe took factory jobs in Michigan's auto industry, and when reformers and employers pushed English instruction as part of Americanization. It comes from the National Photo Company collection, and its orderly composition shows how companies and public agencies wanted such programs presented. The image links language training to factory work in the early auto age.
