Four figures stand with their backs to the camera, bundles at their feet, gazing out over open water from a dock that the record ties to Ellis Island. The viewer takes the newcomers' place, looking toward the harbor that many arrivals saw first. Underwood & Underwood, a New York firm known for stereographs, registered the image in October 1912, when Ellis Island was the main gateway for millions of immigrants arriving by sea.
