Seen from behind, four immigrants stand on a dock with their bundles and luggage, gazing out over the water toward the harbor they have just crossed. Ellis Island, in New York Harbor, served as the main federal station for processing arrivals from 1892 to 1954, and in 1907 it handled more than a million people in a single year. The photograph was made by the Underwood & Underwood studio, a firm known for stereographs and news pictures, and it was registered for copyright in 1912. The back-to-camera pose invites viewers to share the travelers' view and the uncertain wait before inspection.
