Few pictures on this board show the crossing itself, and this one places its passengers aboard an Atlantic liner, not at the Ellis Island inspection line. The print was registered with the U.S. Copyright Office in December 1906, which is why a copy survives in the Library of Congress. In those years, most immigrants reached New York in the cheapest accommodation, the steerage decks below the first- and second-class cabins, and photographs like this were among the few records of that long voyage. Viewers today can compare the crowding and clothing here with the processing that waited at Ellis Island.
