Steerage passengers crowd the deck of the North German Lloyd liner *Friedrich der Grosse* in this view, the emigrants' own space far below the first-class decks. Press photographer George Grantham Bain made the picture sometime between about 1907 and 1921, a period when millions of people crossed the Atlantic in steerage. Many of the passengers on such ships later faced medical and legal inspection at Ellis Island in New York Harbor, the first stop for most immigrants arriving by sea. The photograph offers a rare look at the conditions and crowding of the voyage before that inspection began.
