Castle Garden, the circular sandstone fort at the southern tip of Manhattan, is the subject here, seen from the water with the bay opening out beyond it. Built as a military fort in the early 1800s, it later served as a theater and concert hall and then, from 1855 until 1890, as the first immigration station in the United States, where millions of arrivals passed through before Ellis Island took over that role. This c1897 view, copyrighted by J.S. Johnston, comes from a period when the building had already been converted to an aquarium, and it captures the waterfront that once greeted so many newcomers.
