Roof gardens on Boston schoolhouses gave crowded city children a place to play in open air, and this view of the Washington School's rooftop shows immigrant pupils learning those games. Taken in October 1909 and attributed to photographer Lewis Hine, it belongs to the body of work he made for the National Child Labor Committee, which used images like this to argue for better conditions for city children. Note how the adults and children share the frame, a reminder that schools were often where newcomers learned English and American customs.
