Few places shaped American life as directly as the Ellis Island immigration station, and this view, published by the Tompkinsville photographer A. Loeffler, shows the island in its busiest years. Loeffler's copyrighted print, catalogued in the Library of Congress with a date of about 1905, is one of many commercial views sold to visitors and newcomers curious about the new federal facility. Between 1892 and 1954, millions of immigrants passed through its buildings for medical and legal inspection before entering the country, and the station's landing area was the first American ground many of them stood on.
