Few places shaped American families quite like Ellis Island, the federal immigration station in New York Harbor that processed millions of arrivals in the early twentieth century. This photograph shows an Italian immigrant family at the station around 1910, a moment when newcomers were examined by inspectors, questioned about their health and finances, and then either admitted or detained before stepping into the city. Italian arrivals made up a large share of immigrants passing through the island in those years, and the picture captures the uncertainty and hope that marked the wait. Its place in the Library of Congress collection makes it a useful record of how families presented themselves at the gateway.
