Ellis Island's immigration station, which opened in 1892 and processed millions of arrivals before closing in 1954, is the setting for this Yiddish-language poster, where the Statue of Liberty stands in the harbor behind a crowd of newcomers. The printed text in Yiddish would have addressed Jewish readers, many of whom had fled pogroms and poverty in Eastern Europe and were navigating the same steamship-to-processing-hall route the poster depicts. Posters like this one circulated in immigrant neighborhoods, where they offered both a welcoming image of America and practical notices for people trying to find their footing. Look closely at the figures in the foreground, whose clothing and bundles mark them as travelers still arriving with everything they owned.
