A 1917 lithograph from the New York firm Sackett & Wilhelms pairs the Statue of Liberty with immigrants on a ship's deck, urging viewers to remember their "first thrill of American liberty" and buy government bonds. It was issued for the Second Liberty Loan, a bond drive the federal government ran in the fall of 1917 to help pay for American entry into World War I, which had begun that April. The poster links the wartime appeal to the story of arrival, a theme that tied the nearby Ellis Island station to the country's sense of itself. Its subject headings also point to the war's economic side, when civilians were asked to finance the war as well as serve in it.
