This 1917 poster ties the Statue of Liberty and newly arrived immigrants to a call for war bonds. Its catalog record also lists a ship's deck, a reminder that many immigrants reached New York by sea. It promotes the Second Liberty Loan, the government's bond drive that followed the United States' entry into World War I in April 1917. Liberty Bonds were marketed to ordinary citizens as a patriotic duty, and posters like this one, printed by the New York firm Sackett & Wilhelms, were a main way the campaign reached the public.
