Steam freighter W.W. Brown is shown taking on coal at a Cleveland dock, with hoisting machinery swinging over her hold. Cleveland was a major Great Lakes port, and coal flowed out from the region's mines to fuel the furnaces and steamers that moved iron ore and grain across the lakes. The Detroit Publishing Company, which issued views of American cities and industry in the early twentieth century, made this glass-plate negative, so the picture also records how cargo handling looked before the trade became more mechanized.
