Few buildings in the Detroit Publishing Company's Cleveland views carry a name as recognizable as the Rockefeller Building, which took its name from John D. Rockefeller, who founded Standard Oil in Cleveland in 1870. This glass-plate negative was made between 1900 and 1915, when downtown Cleveland was filling with tall office blocks serving the city's growing industries. The Detroit Publishing Company sold views like this one to travelers and publishers, so the picture records how a major commercial street looked to the public of that era.
