The Rockefeller Building, the Cleveland office block near Public Square, was closely tied to the city's oil industry, since Standard Oil, founded in Cleveland by John D. Rockefeller, kept its offices there. This 1910 view, made on an 8 by 10 inch glass negative, shows the building on a busy downtown street, and the catalog subjects of construction and streets point to a city growing upward in those years. The picture comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial firm that photographed American cities and landscapes for publishers and railroads in the early twentieth century.
