This view of the Citizens Savings and Trust Company Building shows a bank and office block in downtown Cleveland, a city that grew quickly around 1905 as industry and commerce expanded. Banks and office buildings like this one were central to that growth, and their large street fronts were meant to project stability to depositors and passersby. The photograph is a glass negative from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for large-format views of American cities and landscapes at the turn of the twentieth century. Its survival in several formats, including a transparency, shows how the company reproduced its views for different uses.
