This view shows a boulevard that connects Gordon Park and Wade Park, two green spaces on Cleveland's east side. Cleveland's leaders built a network of parks and parkways in the late 1800s and early 1900s, partly to give residents room for fresh air, exercise and leisurely drives. The Detroit Publishing Company made its American views on large glass plates like this 8 by 10 inch negative and sold the resulting images as postcards and prints. Scenes like this one capture how the city's wide, tree-lined roads looked during a period of rapid change in urban travel.
