The landing at Put-in-Bay, on South Bass Island in Lake Erie, is the focus here, where the Cleveland, Put-in-Bay & Toledo Line brought steamboat passengers to the island. The resort drew summer visitors from Cleveland and Toledo, and its nearness to the site of Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry's 1813 naval victory over the British gave it added historical interest. The Detroit Publishing Company, which photographed resorts and waterfronts across the country in the years around 1900, made the view. Its glass negative captures the pier as a working landing built for steady traffic of arriving and departing boats.
