The entrance to Gordon Park, a lakefront park on Lake Erie in Cleveland, is the focus of this view, captured on an 8 by 10 inch glass plate negative from the years between 1900 and 1910. The record also tags bridges, which suggests a crossing or span appears along the park's approach. The Detroit Publishing Company sent photographers across the country during this period to record parks, streets and scenic places for travel views sold to visitors and publishers. Images like this one show how a public park presented itself to early visitors, many of whom arrived on foot, by streetcar or by carriage.
