Gordon Park, on the Lake Erie shoreline east of downtown Cleveland, is the setting here, with its sandy beach and pavilion. The glass negative is an 8 by 10 inch plate from the Detroit Publishing Company, which between about 1900 and 1910 photographed American towns, resorts and landscapes for sale as postcards and travel views. Lakefront parks like this one drew city residents seeking cool air and open water in summer, and pavilions of this kind often served as gathering places for picnics and social events. The plate reached the Library of Congress as a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado.
