Gordon Park, on the lakefront in northeast Cleveland, is the setting for this view of its bathing pavilion, which drew city families to Lake Erie around the turn of the twentieth century. The glass plate negative comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers traveled widely to record American towns and scenery for sale as commercial prints. Public bathing facilities of this era were part of a broader effort by cities to give working families fresh air, open water, and supervised recreation. The record also lists children playing outdoors among its subjects.
