The New England Building, photographed in Cleveland around 1905, is an office block from a period when the city's commercial core was growing upward with steel frames and larger office floors. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made this glass plate negative, was known in these years for travel and city views sold to railroads, hotels, and publishers. Its large 8 by 10 inch negative captures the street-level detail of a busy downtown, and the plate reached the Library of Congress through a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado.
