Few pictures in the collection show the inside of an amusement park's performance space, so this view of the circus ring at Luna Park in Cleveland stands apart from the city street scenes and waterfront views around it. Around 1905, parks like Luna Park drew crowds with circus acts, sideshows, and mechanical rides, and their ring arenas offered a more formal kind of spectacle than a traveling tent show. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made the picture, was known for large-format views of American towns and attractions, and its glass negatives capture the layout and crowds of such places with unusual detail.
