Luna Park in Cleveland was one of several parks across the country that borrowed the name of the famous Coney Island attraction, and this view shows it with water in the frame, as the subject tags suggest. Around 1905, when this glass negative was likely made, such parks drew crowds of working families who came by streetcar for rides, games, and summer entertainment. The picture was made by the Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial firm that photographed American towns and scenery for sale and promotion in the early 1900s. Its large-format negatives capture fine detail in buildings, crowds, and landscape, which makes them useful records of how leisure looked in that era.
