The viaduct spanning the ravine in Rockefeller Park is what sets this view apart from other Cleveland scenes. The park was laid out in the late 1890s along the Doan Brook valley with funds from John D. Rockefeller, and its stone bridges and drives were meant to make the wooded gorge a showpiece for the growing city. The Detroit Publishing Company, which sent photographers across the country around 1900 to 1910, made this view on an 8 by 10 inch glass negative, a format that recorded fine architectural detail.
