Euclid Avenue was Cleveland's principal boulevard, and this view from about 1905 shows a street in transition from elegant residences to commerce. By then it had become a busy corridor of department stores, offices and streetcar lines, reflecting the rapid growth of the city as an industrial center on Lake Erie. The image survives as an 8 by 10 inch glass negative made by the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for documenting American cities and landscapes between about 1900 and 1910. Its large format preserves the sharp detail that makes such negatives valuable to researchers studying urban life.
