The Soldiers & Sailors Monument stands on Public Square in downtown Cleveland, and this c1905 view was made on an 8 x 10 inch glass dry plate negative by the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers documented American towns and landmarks at the turn of the century. The monument honors the Union men from Cuyahoga County who served in the Civil War, and it was completed in the 1890s as one of the city's central civic memorials. Its Civil War subject ties it to the postwar wave of commemoration that filled American squares and parks with statues and obelisks. The glass plate format gives the image fine detail in the stonework and the surrounding streetscape.
