The Soldiers and Sailors' Monument rises above Public Square in downtown Cleveland, a granite memorial to the men from the region who fought for the Union between 1861 and 1865. The plaza around it served as the city's central gathering place, and the monument anchored that civic space. This c1908 view comes from a glass negative made by the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for its early twentieth-century photographs of American cities and landmarks. It shows the monument as the city's visitors and residents would have encountered it in the years after its completion.
