The Colonial Arcade was one of the covered shopping passages that were popular in American downtowns around the turn of the 20th century, when glass roofs let daylight reach rows of storefronts set along a central walkway. This view survives as an 8 x 10 inch glass negative made by the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that photographed cities and scenery across the country for sale as commercial prints. The interior was a place where shoppers strolled, lingered, and were shown the latest goods, so the picture records both the architecture of the building and the everyday commercial life it housed.
