The plaza at University Circle, shown here around 1908, was the centerpiece of a cluster of schools on Cleveland's east side that later became Case Western Reserve University. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made this 8 by 10 inch glass negative, was known for documenting American towns and landmarks at the turn of the twentieth century for travel books and postcards. The photograph captures the street-and-plaza layout of a neighborhood that was being built up as an education district, so it shows how the city was planning its public spaces in that period.
