The Union League Club's clubhouse in Cleveland is the focus here, and the catalog's mention of street railroads suggests streetcar tracks run through the scene. The Union League was a private men's club, one of the social institutions that gathered business and professional men in American cities around the turn of the twentieth century. The view comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for large-format photographs of American cities and scenery made before 1910. The glass negative was given to the State Historical Society of Colorado in 1949, and it later entered the Library of Congress collection.
