This view looks south along the Cuyahoga River from the Superior Avenue viaduct, where a lift bridge carried traffic over the water while its deck could be raised to clear passing vessels. Steamboats and other working craft on the river were the lifeblood of Cleveland's industrial port, which shipped iron ore, coal, and manufactured goods across the Great Lakes. The Detroit Publishing Company sent photographers across the country in the early 1900s, and their glass negatives captured these busy waterfront scenes at a time when rail and river commerce were reshaping American cities.
