The Midland King, a freighter photographed at Cleveland, was one of many bulk carriers working the Great Lakes in the early 1900s, and the cargo in this view is coal. Cleveland sat on the south shore of Lake Erie and served as a busy port where coal moved out and iron ore moved in, supplying the steel mills and rail lines of the region. The picture comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers made glass-plate negatives between about 1900 and 1915 to document American cities, industry and scenery. The 8 by 10 inch negative captures fine detail in the ship's hull and rigging.
