The picture shows the steamer City of Ottawa heading into the mouth of Cuyahoga Creek at Cleveland, with tugboats and bridges marking the busy river harbor. Around 1900 to 1920, the lower Cuyahoga carried heavy Great Lakes traffic in iron ore, coal, and freight, and movable bridges and tugs had to work around vessels entering and leaving the channel. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made this 8 by 10 inch glass negative, documented American cities and waterways in this period. Its surviving negatives give a detailed record of how the working waterfront looked.
