Few steamers on the Great Lakes carried more holiday excursion traffic than the *Eastland*, shown here tied up in Cleveland with a lifesaving station visible behind it. Passenger steamers like this one ran summer trips between lake ports, and the station in the background reflects the waterfront safety infrastructure that grew up around that traffic. The *Eastland* is better known for capsizing at a Chicago River dock in July 1915, which killed more than 800 people and became one of the deadliest maritime disasters in the region's history. This glass negative comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers documented American towns and transportation in color-tinted and black-and-white views around 1900 to 1915.
