The steamer *City of the Straits* is the subject here, photographed at Cleveland, where passenger and freight boats like her worked the Lake Erie and Detroit River routes in the early twentieth century. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made this 8 x 10 inch glass negative between about 1900 and 1920, sent photographers across the country to document railroads, waterfronts and resort towns, and its Great Lakes views capture a time when steamboats were a common part of city life. The vessel's name points to the Straits of Mackinac, the water link between Lakes Michigan and Huron that many of these boats served. Lake steamers of this era often carried both travelers and cargo, so the picture offers a record of a working waterfront as much as a single ship.
