This view shows a lift bridge in Cleveland, Ohio, where a span rises vertically between towers to let ships pass beneath. The Cuyahoga River, which runs through the city's industrial Flats, carried heavy traffic of iron ore, coal, and steel, so bridges there had to balance road and rail crossings with the needs of Great Lakes shipping. The picture is one of the Detroit Publishing Company's glass-plate negatives, made roughly between 1900 and 1920, when the company documented American cities and landscapes for sale as photographs and color prints.
