Stepping into the grand salon of the steamer *City of Cleveland* would have meant entering one of the most lavish public rooms afloat. Passenger steamers on the Great Lakes competed for travelers with fine furnishings, high ceilings and carefully arranged lounges, and this interior shows that effort at its height. The glass negative dates from roughly 1907 to 1910, when the Detroit Publishing Company was documenting American scenery, cities and travel for postcards and promotional sales. Its large 8 by 10 inch format captures fine detail in the woodwork, seating and decor.
