Tied up at Wyandotte, Michigan, on the Detroit River, the steamer *City of Cleveland* is the focus of this 1907 glass-plate negative. Passenger steamers like her carried travelers and freight between Great Lakes ports in the early 1900s. The Detroit Publishing Company made thousands of views of American towns, rail lines and waterways, many for promotional use, and this one preserves a working waterfront at the height of lake steamboat travel. Rail and later automobile travel gradually reduced the role of such vessels, which makes the scene a useful record of how river towns depended on shipping.
