The record names the steamer *City of Cleveland*, a vessel that would have carried passengers and freight on the Great Lakes, the kind of ship that tied Cleveland's harbor to the wider lake trade. The picture is an 8 by 10 inch glass negative made by the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers traveled widely from the 1890s into the 1920s recording American waterways, cities and industry. Lake steamers were a common subject for the company, and this view from about 1907 to 1910 reflects a time when water travel was still central to moving people and goods. The negative came to the Library of Congress as a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado.
