This 1907 glass-plate negative shows the stern of the steamer *City of Cleveland* while it was still under construction at Wyandotte, Michigan, on the Detroit River. Its unfinished state makes the hull framing and the rear of the vessel easy to read. The Detroit Publishing Company, which documented American towns, rivers, and industry in the early twentieth century, made the picture. Lake passenger steamers like this one carried travelers and freight between Great Lakes ports, and images of their construction show the shipbuilding trade at its peak.
