This view, catalogued as City Square, shows the open plaza at the center of downtown Cleveland, which the city knows today as Public Square, and its wide sweep suggests the photographer meant to take in the whole space at once. The square dates to the original 1796 town plan, and by around 1901 it was a busy crossroads of streetcar lines and downtown commerce. The Detroit Publishing Company, which issued many views of American cities and landscapes around 1900, made the print, but the caption data is old and unverified, so its date and details should be read with some caution.
