Work on the west breakwater at Cleveland Harbor shows the federal effort to keep the Cuyahoga River's mouth navigable on the shore of Lake Erie. Breakwaters there were built as long barriers of timber cribs and stone that broke the force of waves and kept sand and silt from filling the channel. Storms regularly damaged such structures, so reconstruction was an ongoing task for the engineers responsible for the port. The record dates the print to about 1904, but that date comes from an unverified caption card, so it is best read as an estimate.
