This view of Cleveland's harbor survives as three separate 8 x 10 inch glass negatives, which were meant to be joined into one wide panorama. The Detroit Publishing Company, which issued photographs of American towns and landscapes in the years around 1900, made many such views for sale to the public. Cleveland's harbor, at the mouth of the Cuyahoga River on Lake Erie, was a busy shipping point, where lake freighters and railroad lines moved iron ore, coal, and freight. The rail tracks running along the waterfront in the record show how closely the city's commerce depended on that connection between lake and land.
