Warren, Arizona, in 1909 was a company town in the copper country of southeastern Arizona, then still a territory that would not become a state until 1912. The Calumet and Arizona Mining Company had laid out the townsite a few miles from the older mining camp of Bisbee, and the district's economy rested on copper extracted from the surrounding hills. Ore moved by rail to smelters, and the mines drew miners and their families from across the United States and from Mexico, Europe, and other places. Warren was known in the region for its comparatively orderly residential neighborhoods, which set it apart from the rougher mining camps nearby. The town's fortunes followed the price of copper and the labor of the men working underground.
