Morenci, in the Gila Mountains of southeastern Arizona Territory, was a copper mining town in 1909, with its economy built almost entirely on the open-pit and underground workings that surrounded it. Arizona would not become a state until 1912, so the town still answered to territorial government, and the mining companies held most of the local power. Ore from the district was processed at smelters in the nearby Clifton area, and the work drew miners from across the Southwest and from Mexico, Cornwall, and southern and eastern Europe. Residents in 1909 would have known Morenci as a company town where the whistle, the shift change, and the price of copper set the rhythm of daily life.
